Two Tiny Stencils in a Shelter That Still Holds Church
The paint is on the wall. The template that made it is gone.
David Pearce at Witwatersrand and Kiah Johnson at Cambridge report two human-like figures, about 9 centimetres tall, at the La Rochelle shelter near Carolina in Mpumalanga. Each is bare rock inside a spray of red paint, with a halo of specks and no hard outline. The authors read them as paint blown over a purpose-made template, then lifted. They know of no published stencil tradition in southern Africa.
The shelter is about 30 metres long. It still has fine-line paintings of eland and hartebeest. It also has a concrete floor, pews, and a pulpit. The paper is in the South African Archaeological Bulletin this year. The figures have no date.

The Rational Explanation
"First in southern Africa" means first published, not first made. A spray of paint around a void can be a damaged painting, a later drip, or a trick of the rock. The paper is a field report, not a dated sequence. A template of wax, clay, wood, bone, or leather is a good inference from a clean edge. It is an inference.
What We Don't Know
The age. Who cut the template. Whether the two figures are people, spirits, or a shape the painters did not mean us to name. The church furniture is not part of the art. It is the unsettling fact that the room is still in use.
The Rabbit Hole
Stencil art is famous from other continents and almost absent from the published southern African record, which is otherwise one of the richest rock-art provinces on earth. A missing technique in a crowded tradition is its own kind of silence. The object that would explain it was lifted off the wall and did not survive.
