A Fifth-Century Clay Figure Holds a Rod Nobody Can Name

Gunma put a haniwa on public view today. The job title is an interpretation.

Gunma Prefecture announced on 21 October, and put on public view from 28 October, a clay figure from the moat of Tomb No. 1 at Nishikaminomiya in Isesaki. It was found in July. What survives runs from the head to the torso, about 40 centimetres, late 5th century. The hair is a looped knot in a women's style of the period. A sash crosses the chest. The left hand holds a narrow rod. Red pigment remains on the face, the sash, the hair ties, and the bracelets. Tokyo Shimbun notes the fingers and the nostrils are still there.

Officials call her a miko, a woman in ritual. A careful writeup of the same announcement says that label is an interpretation, and that the rod's job is unknown. Human-shaped haniwa are rare this early in the prefecture. The object in the hand is the part nobody can name.

The Rational Explanation

Hairstyle and a sash do not prove a priesthood. The rod could be a tool, a staff, or a support the sculptor needed so the arm would survive the kiln. "Shaman" is a headline word sitting on a careful maybe. Most haniwa are horses, houses, and shields. A person is rarer. Rarer is not the same as holy.

What We Don't Know

What the rod is for. Whether the figure is one person, a type, or a role. What the rest of the body looked like. The moat is a context. It is not a caption.

The Rabbit Hole

Kofun tombs are ringed with clay attendants that were never meant to be portraits. When one of them holds a thing we cannot name, the temptation is to invent a rite. The better move is to leave the hand closed around the unknown and say so.
